Chapter 22 Art since 1945

For me it was just OK I was a little surprised to see that Leroy Neiman

did not make this chapter I am a big fan of his and I am doing my artist report

on him two of the really big artist of this time were Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol

to very different styles but both very big for this time period as a matter of fact

Neiman work reminds me a little of Pollock the way the colors all swirl about the

paintings and I found Warhol to be a little strange but that is just me. For my

artist to compare this chapter I choose Mark Rothko and his work Orange and Yellow

done in 1956

to Helen Frankenthalers Spring Bank 1974

I was not really fond of either of these pieces I found both to be pretty boring

and lacking any depth pretty basic I am not sure what the artists are trying to

say with these pieces if anything at all. not my cup of tea but to each his own.

my next 2 are Kerry James Marshal's Past Times 1997 and Eric Fischl's Barbeque 1982

I did enjoy Fischl's painting a lot I like how there were lots of things going on

in it but it did not come off as too busy which is what I thought about Marshal's

work I also did not enjoy the colors of Past Times they just did not work for me.

The 4 types of literacy

Tuesday's nights lecture was on the 4 types of literacy text literacy,

visual literacy, network literacy and the one Glenn made up educational literacy

what I think Glenn was saying was education needs to keep up with the changes are

our education system as we know it is bound to fail I have to say that I agree

strongly with Glenn on this one is does not make much sense that our children are

computer literate by the time they start school yet we teach them the same way as

we always have with a teacher up in front of them getting them to remember facts

not learning in a active style that computer based learning can give I am not

saying get rid of the teacher I am sure neither was Glenn but by all means throw

in some computer interaction type things to help them learn. We also saw some

clips from a movie called The Reader which was about a woman who would rather plead

guilty to a murder charge then to let everyone know that she could not read or

write Glenn said the coolest thing about this movie is it had no hero's only

victims which makes it different then all other movies I plan on renting it because

what I saw of the movie I found interesting. We also talked about how the goverment

killed wikileaks and how the recording industry killed napster both out of fear.

my 2 favorite quotes of Glenn this week were law has nothing to do with the truth

and media creates values(sex sells). All in all a very cool week, thank you

class on the 18th

well that Tuesday did not go well for me because I got very ill and could not stay

for the class so I missed out on the 1st week of artist reports I hope they all went

well. I am sure they did I am going to get the lecture notes from another student

hopefully anyway. so not much to say about the class till later. I wish I could have

stayed for the whole class but no such luck.

BIG PROBLEM WITH CHAPTER 23

Hi Glenn I am not sure what I should do my book is a 8th edition and it does

not have a chapter 23 it only goes to chapter 22 I will see you in class Tuesday

to find out what you want me to do about this chapter.

Chapter 13 Architecture

before this I never really considered Architecture to be art just goes to show

how little I know about art some of these structures are truly mind blowing in their

style and beauty and lets not forget one of the most important things when it comes

to Architecture function I mean it does matter how beautiful a structure is it must

stand secure or what good is it. with all types of construction styles from

load- bearing to post and lintel all the way to dome styles each very interesting in

their own rite but by far my favorite is post lintel style used a lot by East Asians

to build such beautiful things like the Hoodo(Phoenix Hall) on page 315 this

building is so breath taking it has to be art. instead of artist for this chapter

I will be comparing buildings 1st the Taj Mahal it is a great example of dome style

with pointed arch and vault thrown in I am comparing it to the Pantheon.Rome both

are great dome structures I think the Taj Mahal is much more beautiful and pleasing

to the eye the differance between the 2 are the Pantheon mixes dome style with

post and lintel and the Taj Mahal mixes dome with arch and vault. the next 2 are

Kallikrates. Temple of Athena which is Post- and-Lintel to Point du Gard'Nimes

which is Round Arch and Vault both of theses works seem to me to be pretty basic

work with little to no flare to speak of but what they lack in flare their make up

for with function I guess the major differance would be the Point du Gard is a

multi-level structure as where the temple is not. all in all I found out some new

in this chapter a building truly can be some of the best art work out there.

better late then never sorry!

this blog is about Tuesday oct. 11th class it was very cool we all drew a Pecaso

by drawing it in sections I guess this was to shut off the part of our brain that can

make it hard to draw because once you know what you are drawing the mind plays tricks

on some of us like Glenn said when he put the chair up on a table and said draw it

some of us would draw a chair that looks nothing like the one on the table because

that part of the brain would tell us I know chair this is what a chair should look

like and then it would be hard to draw the chair on the table even though drawing

a chair is not that hard. the drawing also proved another point that the parts

of the drawing where less then the whole drawing you know all the lines where

really easy to draw and in the end made a pretty cool drawing one that I am sure

I could not draw if I looked at the whole thing and tried to draw it. so I must

say I thought this class was very cool.

Chapter 12 Crafts

Craft and Art originally shared the same meaning and I can see why I found some of

these crafts to be truly breath taking from works made from clay to very beautiful

Tapestry's all the way to works from Metal and Wood I found them all to be amazing

in their own rite. With all the different styles to choose from it was very hard to

come up with my 2 sets of artists to compare but I did so here goes 1st pick was

Susan Ewing's Winged pitcher and sugar container 1991 made from Sterling silver and

24K vermeil with beautiful inlay work and very cool lines and it very different

shape it to me would compare to any of the sculpture's from the last chapter I

really liked this work a lot. I compared it to Filippo and Francesco's Burgonet of

of Charles made in 1545 and made from Steel and Gold this piece also had great

inlay work and beautiful lines with such deep detail though out the entire work

far more detail then the other piece both works had great lines and mixtures of

metals but it is in the details that these two works differ I really enjoyed both

of them but if I had to pick just one it would be the second one because of it's

amazing detail. Next was Maria and Julian Martinez's Jar c. 1939 to Magdalene

Odundo's Vessel 2000 both are interesting to look at but I must say this pick was

very easy for me I enjoyed the Jar c. much more then the Vessel piece it was more

pleasing to the eye with great inlay work and with a wonderful shape what I did

enjoy from the Vessel was it's rare feel it had it just was so interesting to me.

so what I learned this chapter was art is also in our every day life things such as

a chair or a rug can be and is sometimes great art.

Field trip

hey so was Tuesday cool are what we went on a field trip to fine art or things

we thought could be art and come up with a back ground story about the art. I was on

a team with 3 very nice ladies and we found some art posters in a window that caught

our eyes it wasn't the posters as much as the glare from the lights that made the

posters look 3D which we all thought looked pretty cool I don't think Glenn thought

they were as cool as we did but we gave a good story behind the art so I thought we

did just fine. my favorite art discovery and story was by far the rock tree I

thought the student did a great job not just with the story but by finding a really

cool work of art. some art works and their story were great and some others were

just ok but I thought everyone did a great job and it was a very interesting class

it just goes to show you art is all around us all we have to do is look.

chapter 11 edit

my post came out wrong when I went to compare my 2nd set of artist's it should have

Auguste Rodin and his work The Burghers of Calons 1884-1888 to Luis Jimenez's Vaquero

1980. sorry about that I am new to blogging I should have preveiwed it before posting.

Chapter 11

Sculpture and Installation what a cool chapter I have always been interested in

Sculpture for me it is one of the coolest if not the coolest art form with that said

lets pick our artists to compare for this week 1st off I choose David Smith's XI

Books and III Apples 1959 and compared it to Mark di Suvero's Origins 2001-2004 1st

off they are both made of steel using basic shapes and forms mixed together to make

their pieces both of these artists blend the different shapes to form what I think

are 2 really cool looking pieces the major differance in these pieces are one is

stainless steel with no paint and the other is painted taking it all in I must

say that I really enjoyed them both. Now on to my next 2 artists are Auguste Rodin

and his work Vaquero molded in 1980 as much as I enjoyed the 1st 2 artists and their

work I enjoyed these 2 a lot more I really loved the great detail that both artist

used in their pieces both are beautiful and so life very breath taking to look at

the lines and details they use seem to bring their pieces to life the major

differance is how and what they are made of with Rodin's piece being made out of

bronze and Jimenez's work being made from Acrylic urethane, fiberglass and steel

even though they were made different they are both equal in their beauty I would

have to say these were my favorite artist's to compare so far

with his work The Burghers of Calons 1884-1888 and I compared it to Luis Jinenez

1st class project

Well our 1st class project was kind of different it was sunrise to sunset with no

electric power what so ever which also included cell phones and anything that ran on

batteries and no use of the car. it sounds pretty easy but guess again you get so

used to all these things that when you don't have them it can be pretty tough. when

I told my other half Deborah she thought it would be fun so our night with no power

started with a bar-b-q with charcoal not propane (thought you had me huh) which was

great then we sat outside in lounge chairs just talking it was nice to just sit and

no be bothered by the outside world after a few hours of talking a star gazing we

went inside to just candle lite where we sat and talked some more until we got

ready to call it a night. looking back on this project I would have to say I really

enjoyed it and I would recommend that everyone take a day of no power and just live

the way people did in the past it is a great way no reconnect with yourself and

your loved ones. so thank you Glenn for such a cool project.

Graffiti Art

So this week it was all about Graffiti Art with the viewing of the movie Bomb it

although Graffiti Art is not my favorite I found the movie and this art form to be

very interesting from it humble beginnings on the streets to it's now more then a

billion dollar business it just goes to show you there is a market for just about

any form of art and that you don't have to be rich to enjoy art as a matter of fact

you can view this art form for free in almost any inner city any where in the world

not just the united states it seems this art form is every where and also it seems

it is here to stay. who would have thought that such a simple thing as Graffiti

could become so powerful it just goes to show you the power of art.
